ROOF SLATING FAQs
What are slate tiles made from?
Made from natural slate rock and sourced from quarries, slate can vary in colours from grey to blue, black, green and even red. using specialist tools and techniques, large blocks of slate are divided into thin, easy-to-move sections that are shaped and smoothed ready for the commercial market.
Is roof slating heat-resistant?
Contributing to the durability of the material, slate provides good heat resistance as it can withstand high temperatures without melting, deforming or emitting any dangerous fumes.
Why should I use slate tiles?
Although the initial cost may be higher compared to other roofing materials, slate offers many benefits that make it a good investment. From being weather resistant to environmentally friendly, low maintenance, durable and available in a variety of styles, sizes and textures, they can complement your property with ease.
What is the slate tile installation process?
Requiring much skill and attention to detail, from your first discussion about the potential of having a slate roof installed through to the supply, fitting and finishing touches, Roundway Roofing provides a thorough service. If needed, we’ll remove the existing roof and inspect for any damage to ensure that we are laying the tiles on a solid foundation. Following this, an underlay usually made from synthetic materials or felt is laid for additional protection and weatherproofing, and flashings are installed around chimneys to prevent water from getting into vulnerable areas.
Before the slate installation, wooden battens will be fitted and act as a base for the tiles, then it’s onto the sorting and layout of the slate tiles, fixing them to the battens and then overlapping and aligning to present a uniform appearance where water can run off with ease. The slate will then be cut to fit around the roof’s features before the ridge and hip tiles are installed and sealing is added to secure the tiles. A final inspection will test that the installation has been a success and that all assets of the roof slating are installed to a high standard.
